that terrified the d.c. region. police eventually arrested john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo for the shootings. they were both convicted. muhammad was executed in 2009. malvo, who was 17 at the time, is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in virginia. >>> the penn quarter neighborhood in northwest washington is remembering a prominent local professor killed in a freak accident. police say rhett leverett was killed yesterday morning when a car jumped the curb when he was walking his dog. investigators say the driver of the car had a medical emergency and lost control of the wheel. leverett was a professor at marymount university and a fixture in the penn quarter neighborhood. >> the mayor of penn quarter is what i would jokingly call him. he'd be in his rounds checking on things, checking on other residents, and checking on the building. >> he was just a mainstay of lafayette, where we live. he's going to be really, really missed. >> leverett's dog beth was not hurt in the accident. she is now being cared for by a neighbor. >> 6:07 is the time.

expected. john dickerson is in our washington bureau. he's our political director. and, john, i wonder what impact does all this early voting have on the campaigns? >> reporter: well, the presidential race is now on two traction-- the traditional election track headed towards november 6 and the early voting track, where what the candidates say and two in these battleground states ask influence votes being cast right now. both candidates have traveled to early-voting states to implore voters to cast their ballots. barack obama will be preparing for debates in nevada, where cbs expects 65% of vote voters to vote early. his presence in the state of nevada stirs up activities for democrats who then will try to lock up their voters early. if a campaign can get lots of voters to vote early, then the campaign can spend its time and resources in other battleground states with other voters. >> pelley: these early votes aren't counted until election day. i wonder how do the campaigns know how people are voting early? >> the secretary of state in most of the early voting states reports daily the names

plane crash in spotsylvania county, virginia is expected to take months. 48-year-old john morton, jr. and his 13-year-old son kyle died in saturday night's crash. virginia state police say the father was practicing takeoffs and landings at the private shannon airport when the cessna plummeted into a mobile home park near the runway. it's believed he spent many of his final moments, the pilot did, trying to avoid hitting some of the mobile homes on the ground. no one on the ground was hurt. >>> the driver of an suv involved in a fiery four- vehicle crash is facing drunk driving charges. d.c. police say more charges are pending. sunday morning's crash in the petworth area of northwest sent six people to the hospital, including two police officers. at last word two of the victims were listed in critical condition with burns. two officers suffered minor burns while trying to free them. authorities have not released the names of those involved. >>> a coal-fired power plant in alexandria that has drawn the scorn of environmentalists for decades is closing today. it in 1949 but had been fo

at the university of denver. romney arrived in denver yesterday as quarterback john elway introduced the presidential nominee at a rally last night. romney told the crowd creating jobs would be the administration's number one priority. president obama preparing for tomorrow's debate but in nevada. he has not made any campaign appearances since sunday. romney says he would not deport any undocumented immigrants in the u.s. because of an executive order the president signed. they can stay for two years if they came before they were 16, are still 30 or younger, and meet other criteria. romney criticized the president for signing that executive order during an election year. he also said he would veto a bill that would grant a path to citizenship. >>> strong attacks coming from both sides, but now some residents in roanoke, virginia, say one anti-obama display goes too far. a man named curtis caldwell put up a statue on his front lawn that is a monkey wearing an obama mask. then it says no 'bama and a confederate flag. >> not trying to say obama is an ape or nothing. if i had a kangaroo,
